Personal Story: Jess
I was brought up in a Spirit-Filled family – my parents had received the Holy Spirit a couple of years before I was born. This in itself was a massive blessing – getting to grow up in a family environment where going to church, reading the bible, saying grace before dinner and having prayer before bed was normal! I received the Holy Spirit myself with the evidence of speaking in tongues in 2006 at a Young Revivalists camp and was baptised by full immersion once I arrived home.
I was excited at the time but being so young, I didn’t really understand how great of a gift I had been given. As I grew up, I continued to go to Sunday meetings and mid-week meetings with my family but when I was 19 I moved from Tassie to Melbourne by myself. This would be a massive change in anyone’s life but for me, this was a change that forced me to rely on God. I had more freedom to choose whether or not to go to meetings or fellowship. At this point I understood it was time to establish my own walk with God and not just live through my parent’s faith.
I was surrounded by so many wonderful Spirit-filled brothers and sisters in the Lord who wouldn’t even know how much they helped me to stay on the right path. I remember a few years ago reading into Jesus’ death and resurrection and I came to a clear understanding of how wonderfully awesome and amazing this undeserved gift is. Filling me with His Spirit is the biggest blessing in my life and everything else He does for me day-to-day is just a bonus. I can certainly praise the Lord for His blessing of peace, His constant support and comfort in my life.
It’s so great to be able to call on Him for all the interesting things life throws at me – big or small. Life still has its up’s and down’s, God never promised anything different, but having this understanding and clarity, His guidance and blessings really puts things into perspective. God has a plan; He’s given me a purpose and a hope and I Praise the Lord for this!
